How to Write Powerful Sentences and Paragraphs" -- The Kindle edition has just come out, making the launch nearly complete. How long should your paragraphs be? I'd prefer to take this line on what a paragraph is. Paragraphing is the most essential aspect of essay writing. Writing tends to improve as you take things away. Over the few months, I've spent a lot more time working with clients on how to systematize this first paragraph writing style in a way that is not only easy for the writer to produce, but also easy for readers to understand and appreciate. These short, concise paragraphs don't have room for irrelevant ideas, so weed out ruthlessly. Almost every piece of writing you do that is longer than a few sentences should be organized into paragraphs. When you're writing for: Print: Use Ziomek's 1-2-3-4-5 rule. A proper paragraph is organized around four major elements: (1) topic sentence (2) introduction (3) body and (4) conclusion. A paragraph is a series of sentences that are organized and coherent, and are all related to a single topic or idea. The last sentence of first body paragraphs ends with phase or sentence that is transitional hook that leads to the second body paragraph. To illustrate, I'll write a So what I do at this point is take each sentence and make it a paragraph. That is, make sure your paragraph contains: 1 idea, expressed in 2 to 3 short sentences, taking 4 to 5 lines on the page. A paragraph is what you write for twenty-seven minutes when you are trying to say exactly one thing, using at least six sentences and at most two-hundred words. That's why everyone encourages you to rampage through your first draft--killing your darlings, omitting needless words, deleting entire sentences and paragraphs. Since then, I developed this method for writing a synopsis that I have used for every synopsis I've written since.
